So You've Decided to Vomit
Heres what you should consider:

If you are a healthy person, vomiting once shouldnt be bad for you. In my opinion, it is better than digesting, absorbing, oxidizing and storing all you eat during the vomitorium! Of course the healthiest thing to do is *not* overeat and *not* later vomit, but if you want to be part of the art, and this might be your way, hereŐs how you can vomit safely:

Serious side effects can, but are unlikely to, occur. Dangerous consequences of vomiting include dehydration, acid-base derangements, fluid volume and electrolyte imbalances, ulcerations of the lining of the stomach and/or esophagus, constipation, irregular bowel movements, and aspiration pneumonia. The simple way to avoid these fates is to adhere to the following

1. Make sure it is OK to vomit first by checking the list below. If you can say no to any of the listed statements, we suggest you refrain from the over consumption and vomiting unless you have been given the OK by your health care provider. Please assist the vomitorium project in some other way. If you have any questions or concerns, you should discuss them with your health care provider.

o I have adequate blood pressure (not too high or low).
o I have no heart problems.
o I have no problems with my eyes (glaucoma, retinal detachments, etc.; vomiting increase the blood pressure in your face.)
o I will start hydrating myself at least 3 days before the vomitorium and will be well hydrated when the vomitorium begins.
o I have not been bulimic for several years.

2. If you have said yes to all of the questions, you can safely vomit. You should be well hydrated the day of the vomitorium. Drink lots of water for a few days beforehand to make sure. How will you know your hydration state? Many factors affect how much you should drink, so there is not one rule dictating quantity that all should follow. If you are urinating fairly clearly and frequently, you are OK. If you take large quantities of B and C vitamins, you may have very bright yellow urine. ThatŐs ok, too, as long as you are urinating frequently. Don't eat anything too acidic or rough texture-wise.

3. While vomiting: Pressure in your head will increase, and you want to make sure you do not allow vomit to enter your respiratory tract. Make sure you are relaxing your body and that your head is not too low. Use may your finger, but never stick an object down your throat. The Romans may have used a feather, but we do not suggest you do. IPECAC can be used as well. Information follows.

4. After you vomit, it is important you rehydrate. Make sure you drink at least 2 x the volume you think you vomited. While you were eating, your body diverted a lot of its water contents to your digestive tract to help digest and absorb the food. Then you lost it in the trough. You need to replace this water. You will probably have sweat a but, too, as digesting, absorbing, transporting and vomiting are a lot of work (you produce lots of heat when you eat which raises your body temperature). Ina ddition, you will lose some necessary nutrients when vomiting, like minerals and salts, that are in your gastrointestinal tract at the time of vomiting. Your body secretes those things with every intention of absorbing them back, later, while itŐs absorbing what you ate. Vomiting robs the body of these things. Return them! Drink a beverage that has some salt and minerals in it. Any gator-like drink or diluted fruit juice will do. Brush your teeth with a gentle toothpaste, or baking soda to neutralize the acid.

Repeated vomiting is a stress on your body. You may break blood vessels in your face and eyes. Dont vomit more than once.

* We don't feel that if youve been bulimic, this would set you off. In fact, it may be a way to give you a sense of control over it. But it's better to be safe. Also, repeated vomiting in the past may have made your stomach/esophagus/teeth overly sensitive.
